講義概要 This seminar will investigate the world of English language learning and teaching. We will study about the history and theory of English language learning and teaching and why many people consider it the world’s second language. We will also look at the role that technology, mass media, business, tourism and government has played in the expansion and teaching of English as a second language. We will learn about and practice techniques for language learning and research about the different dialects of English and the cultures they are used in.
到達目標 The objectives of the class are for students to research and to come away with a better understanding of—
• language learning and teaching,
• how and why English has become the chosen language of international trade and diplomacy,
• the range of Englishes in the world—the dialects, the cultures and how these different people learn English,
• the potential and use of technology in language learning and its role in English language education.
Emphasis will also be placed on researching and writing a thesis in English.
講義方法 The instructor will utilize multimedia resources including the Internet, films and television programs to explain points discussed in class. Students will be asked to participate in and sometimes lead class discussions.
成績評価の方法 Students will be evaluated on several short papers handed in throughout the year. Some topics will be assigned while others students will choose. Grades will be based on participation and work ethic 25%, presentations 25% and reports 50%.
系統的履修 The teacher will lead discussions and ask students to comment and contribute to the topic at hand. There will be a survey of students’ interests that the instructor will consider when selecting topics. Students will also be allowed to investigate their own areas of interest in English and report on them.
