Spend 2 days in communicating only in English/Takuya Yoshida

I tried to spend 2 days without speaking or reading Japanese.I stopped myself from even brousing Japanese web site and sending e-mail to my Japanese friends during the two days.Frankly speaking, the challenge was easier than I thought, because it's not necessary that I communicate with others in Japanese in Canada. For sure,I was tired with English and the challenge a little bit,but I never think that's overpowering. However,I noticed the interesting fact which it's very beneficial and challenging for me to study English only in English.Every time I found a English word I've never seen,I look it up on the internet and read the definition in English. It really helped me understand the definition of the word in detail.I'm pretty sure understanding the difinition of English word in English is really useful to use the word appropriately.

I read news articles in English on the internet at the end of the day ever since a day I started the challenge. It's also so beneficial. There are many tecnical terms or idioms in the articals. It really help me improve my reading ability and vocabulary.

To be honest,I think spending more than two days in communicating with others all in English may make me stressful. That's why I need to speak or text Japanese at least once every three days. But the experience was so interesting and beneficial.I'll try the same challenge again sometimes soon.

Education systems in the USA/Miyu Watanabe

American education systems are totally different from Japanese styles. I asked several people for good and bad point of education system in the USA. Some student said that ‘’ I have never been to another country so I don’t know what is another countries education system is but I like American style of education’’. They told me what American education system is. In my opinion, many of American students are not afraid of give their opinion in front of others. Sometimes they want to give their opinion and want to know what they are think about. They are very aggressive. And classmate make a good atmosphere for each other. Japanese students are always afraid of make a mistake and be shy to give our opinion. My teacher always say that why Japanese students are always so shy. I think it is because our education background. We are learning reading, grammar, writing so hard but we don’t have an opportunity to say something in front of other student. That is Japanese education style I think. I asked about bad point of education system in the USA and one of my friend said it is very expensive to go to the university. Many of students cannot go to the university because they don’t have much money to go. This is very big problem in Japan too so I thought the government should think about that more deeply for the future children.

The Accident at Nuclear Power Station / Mika UEYAMA

In 1986, an accident happened at Chernobyl nuclear power plant and sent shockwaves around the world. It showed the risk of nuclear power generation and left the moral at great expense. However, in 2011, the Tohoku district in Japan was hit by a strong earthquake and Fukushima nuclear power station was broken. At that time, the number of the dead and the missing by calamity like the earthquake, landslide and tsunami were about 18000, refugees who have been affected by these disasters and the accident of the nuclear power station were more than four hundred thousand. The serious damage which Japan was affected was not only a shortage of electric power by breakages of nuclear power station but also radioactive contamination and damage of crops caused by a rumor. As a result, many people lost their precious persons and Japan needed a large sum of money for recovery from these massive disasters. Despite these serious accidents of nuclear power station many countries still rely on nuclear power generation.

It may be little bit early to call these accidents ‘history’, but I discussed the nuclear power station with overseas students who are from China and the teacher who is from the UK in my class. First of all, the teacher asked every one that should we depend on nuclear power generation. All of students including me said ‘No’ to that question, and the reason was the same. It was that the risk of accidents is high and a leak of radioactivity will be dangerous if something happen. Therefore, the discussion was started from the hypothesis that town need electricity and nuclear power station will be introduced there. Then, the teacher separated students into 4 groups according to roles which are business managers, a government agency, environmentalists and local people.

My Chinese friend and I filled the role of the government agency, and we thought mainly how can we persuade environmentalists and local people because if we can success to build the nuclear power station, we will be able to acquire much electricity for low costs. Next, Chinese students who was role of the business manager made a point of the money which will be costed to build and keep it. Persons who were role of the government agency and the business manager did not have risks of accidents on their minds because they had confidence that they can improve operation of nuclear power station from past incidents and were going to hire experts in nuclear power generation.

On the other hand, Chinese students whose roles were environmentalists and local people really guarded against the leak of radioactivity like sudden incidents in Ukraine and Japan. Moreover, they argued that other way of power generation such as solar electricity generation system, wind power generation, geothermal power generation and hydroelectric generation should be introduced.

Finally, I mentioned that the way of power generation except for nuclear power generation cannot cover all of electricity in the big city, and citizens will have to pay the expensive charges for electricity necessarily if people do not depend on nuclear power generation to environmentalists and local people. I went on to say that the probability of happening disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima is quite low, and we seek for opinions to experts in nuclear power generation to prevent from every accidents and do not repeat the same mistake. After that, everyone including the teacher agreed with my ideas, and the discussion was finished.

Actually, everyone did not want to choose nuclear power generation as the way of daily power generation definitely, but I could learn why some countries want to use it and the main opinion of each roles through the discussion at that time. In conclusion, the discussion gave the great opportunity to rethink about ways and systems of power generation to students. In the same way, many people should rethink them with the worst memory by the massive disaster at Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power stations.

Pongsantong Temple in New Year / Yukari Fujikawa

I visited to Buddhism temple in Lampang on January 1st. Lampang is north part of Thailand. The name of that temple is Pongsantong. In Thailand, temples are very important place and used for cerebration, funeral, charity, and so on. There are many decorated buildings and architectures relate Buddhism and Brahmanism. White elephants, Ganesha, Naga… Thai people could accept lots of religions. In the Main Building, golden Buddha statue was put and many kind of food and flowers are dedicated. I was surprised because the complete form of banana tree was there. Moreover, some pictures to introduce Buddha’s life were on the wall. It was mysterious and Awe-inspiring atmosphere.

On January 1st, we have a new year celebration in that temple. People live around the temple visit there with food and water. Those foods will be donated to monks and it is called “Sai Baan”. Thai people believe that if they do something good it will make their next life happier. In the temple, you could eat about 15 kind of Thai food and snack for free. Many people worked there as a charity in January 1st. At 9 o’clock, monks started to read Buddhist sutra. We listened those using strings above us. We put white strings on our head for praying. Sutras sounded pleasant and perfectly clear. I could feel a long history of Thai Buddhism. After sutra, small cart decorated like ship came. We donated flowers and money in it. After that, monks who wear the orange stole with barefoot walked to our place. We put foods into their small bowl with wishing our happiness.

This precious experience made me excited very much. Buddhist sutra in Thailand sounds like a song and different from Japanese. I felt the differences between Theravada and Mahayana.
