Sylvain Cardonnel is a literary translator and researcher specializing in Japanese-French translation, Japanese philosophy, and cultural studies. He has translated works by renowned Japanese authors such as Murakami Ryū, Levy Hideo, Motoya Yukiko, Takahashi Gen'ichirō, Maekawa Yutaka, and Enjō Tō. In 2008, he received the Konishi Foundation Prize for his translation of Yapou, bétail humain by Numa Shōzō. Holding a Ph.D. in philosophy, he co-translated Nishida Kitarō's essay Logique du lieu et vision religieuse du monde(1999). Based in Kyoto since 1989, he teaches in the Department of Intercultural Communication at Ryukoku University. His research explores the concept of 'Hyperart-tomason,' developed by Akasegawa Genpei (1937–2014), focusing on its aesthetic and art historical significance, as well as its relationship with urban space and street observation.
