Fumiaki Izumi is a professor at the Faculty of International Studies at the Department of Intercultural Communication in Ryukoku University, Kyoto.
His main research interests are in the field of language ecology, which examines the interrelationships of language, culture and society. In his classes, the results of his study are shared with students and discussed in a free and open manner.
Besides language ecology, his research also extends to the field of Japanese language education and the cultural-linguistic study of the city of Kyoto. It is expected that these studies might, in the near future, make a considerable contribution to Japanese society and Kyoto; and the town might, thereby, preserve many of its good old traditions, whilst continuing to attract people from all over the world——making and keeping itself, consequently, a city of harmony.
