Kim Jiesun is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Global Studies, Ryukoku University.
She received her Ph.D. in Literature from The University of Tokyo in 2017.
Her research focuses on modern East Asian cultural and music history, with particular attention to the relationship between culture and power. She examines how Japanese traditional music and Western music were introduced, circulated, and transformed in colonial Korea through media, education, and performance practices.
More recently, her work explores the role of musical notation and recording practices, investigating how they have shaped musical knowledge and cultural frameworks in modern East Asia.
In her teaching, she encourages students to critically examine culture and to understand how it is shaped by historical and social forces, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives on East Asian societies.
