He specializes in sociology of media, media and culture, and journalism. He holds a Master's degree from the School of Public Administration, Carleton University (Canada), and a Doctorate degree from the Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies, Hokkaido University. After working at NHK, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and Nagoya University, he joined Ryukoku University in 2011.
