What is JAS ?
Studying at the oldest Buddhist University in Japan can be a life-changing experience. Increasing globalization of information and economics make knowledge and experience in a different culture now a must.
Ryukoku University is now one of the leading pri-vate universities in Japan. There are presently 8 faculties, 15,000 students, several Research Institutes and Centers on two campuses in Kyoto and one campus in Seta,close to Lake Biwa. The Faculty of Intercultural Communication (FIC) was established in 1996 on the Seta campus, close to Kyoto.

The Japanese and Asian Studies (JAS) Program at Ryukoku University offers students with little or no Japanese background a unique opportunity to study Japanese and Asian culture, including: Buddhism and other Asian religions, Japanese literature, theater, society, economics and politics Courses are on Seta Campus (Shiga Prefecture).

Students take "Introduction to Buddhism" (2 credits at Ryukoku University and a Seminar (2 credits) and take classes from among those listed below, each 2 credits. In the Seminar, students are advised by Faculty experts while writing a report on a specific subject.

œBasic Japanese
œBasic Japanese is offered exclusively for those JAS students who wish to learn beginning Japanese.
The themes of lectures are subject to change

Transcripts sent to home institutions contain the number of Ryukoku credits earned (with letter grades).
It is up to a student's home institution to determine the number and type of credit transfer. We recommend students consult relevant faculty at their home institutions about credit transfer before coming to Japan.


Costs:
@EApplication Fee : 10,000 Yen
@ETuition : 160,000Yen


All costs must be paid in Japanese Yen.
Each student is responsible for his or her own travel expenses to and from Japan and miscellaneous commuting costs inside Japan.
Miscellaneous expenses will vary depending on students' spending habits and life style. These expenses include food, personal transportation, and living expenses ( toileteries, clothing, etc. )

Accommodation:
Ryukoku University offers a University dormitory for 25,000 Yen per month, excluding utilities, which is located in the town of Seta.
