Studies & Research at Ryukoku University
Being an international student who has been exposed to many different cultures and has studied at several international institutions, I was surprised at how the post‐colonial approach in this course has broadened my perspective on international topics and disciplines.It is with this modern and open mindset that I intend to approach my research on the attitudes towards immigration in Germany and their impact on second and third generation immigrants.
Many of the professors in this faculty have studied abroad and understand the struggles of studying a subject in a second or third language.There are also a number of professors from abroad - so do not be discouraged by language difficulties if you are considering to apply!
What I appreciate the most about this course is the system which allows the student to tailor their classes to correlate with their research or topics related to their research.
First, a student is assigned with a supervisor, who will guide and support the student throughout the most important phases of their research.I have decided to apply to my supervisor based on their published works, specializations and their perspectives; you will find that the expertise of this faculty's professors extend over many different areas and skills to help you expand your possibilities and potential ensuring that you produce the best work you possibly can.
In addition, there are selective courses, which not only develop your research skills and methods, but also certain subjects (e.g.: Comparative Education, Globalization and Migration, etc.)in which you may be assigned to identify and explore the relations between the subject and your own research topic and present these findings to your professor and course mates.This may also contribute towards your research and prepare you for your "Core Seminar" presentations, in which professors specializing in varying disciplines will support you with their own input and advice. Of course, your course mates will also provide you with ideas and suggestions you may not have thought of yourself.
These steps have ensured that I remain on the right track of my research, and most importantly, that my experience here as a graduate student is beyond a transitional process leading to my professional career.

私は現在日本の英語教育の小中高連携について、評価の観点から研究をしています。この研究科は、大学院生に非常に研究を行いやすい環境を提供してくれています。大学院生用の研究室だけでなく、研究費を援助するシステムも整っており、非常に満足しています。私は研究活動の中で、沖縄県の英語教育やシンガポールへフィールド調査を行いました。こういった活動が出来ているのも、この研究科が私の研究をサポートしてくれているからです。
大学院生の研究は多岐にわたっており、お互いに意見を交換し合うことや研究の進捗状況について話し合ったりもします。こういったことが良い刺激となり、お互いに切磋琢磨しています。また、この研究科の教授の方々は海外の大学院で研究をしていた方が非常に多いです。また、研究の分野も多様なので、自分の研究領域とは違う分野からのアプローチや研究方法についても広く学ぶことができます。加えて、大学院生と教授の方々との距離も近く、担当教員以外とも普段から交流をすることが多々有ります。私にとって多くの教授の方々が先生というより、むしろ大先輩といった関係性になっているかもしれません。このような環境や人との関係性こそが、この研究科の特徴のひとつと言えるでしょう。私はこのような環境で、学べていることが非常に幸運だったと考えています。
