Composing academic essays in English presents considerable challenges for English language learners, does it not? When engaging in English essay writing, learners frequently encounter obstacles such as limited vocabulary and expressions, grammatical inaccuracies, insufficient logical organisation, and a lack of familiarity with argumentation strategies. Addressing these issues necessitates systematic and scaffolded instruction in English writing. Implementing L2 writing instruction grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) can offer promising solutions to these challenges.
What makes SFL-GBA-based L2 writing particularly compelling, an area in which I specialise, is its investigation into how language constructs meaning and mediates social interactions. Specifically, its focus on academic writing and language use equips English learners with the tools to articulate their ideas more effectively and to enhance their communicative competence in academic contexts.

英語学習者が，アカデミックエッセーを英語で書くことは容易ではないですよね。私達が英語エッセーを書く時，語彙力や表現力の不足，文法的な誤り，論理的な構成の欠如・論証方法への理解不足など，さまざまな課題に直面することが多々ありますね。これらの問題を克服するためには，段階的な英語ライティングのトレーニングが必要です。Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) と Genre-Based Approach (GBA) を導入したL2ライティングが，もしかすると上述した問題を解決してくれるかもしれません。
私の専門分野であるSFL GBA L2 writing の面白さは，言語がどのようにしてコミュニケーションを構築し，社会的な活動にどう影響を与えるかを探るところにあります。特に，学術的な文章や言語の使い方に焦点を当てることで，英語学習者がどのようにして自分の考えを効果的に伝えるかを理解し，その能力を育成することができます。

Qualitative research is a methodological approach designed to achieve an in-depth understanding and interpretation of specific phenomena and lived experiences. It emphasizes uncovering the intentions, actions, and meanings underlying participants’ experiences through observation and interviews conducted in naturalistic settings (Creswell, 2014). Are you curious about questions such as, “Why does it take so long to learn English?” or “Why do some individuals enjoy learning English while others do not?” If your aim is to explore "why" in depth, qualitative research methods may prove valuable.
In this seminar, we will examine human behavior, social phenomena, and individual lived experiences by engaging with the foundational concepts and methodological principles of qualitative research.

質的研究は, 特定の現象や経験について深く理解し, 解釈することを目的とした研究方法であり，自然な設定での観察やインタビューを通じて, 参加者の意図や行動, 経験の背後にある意味を解明することに焦点を当てます(Creswell, 2014)。皆さんは，「英語を学ぶ時，ものすごく時間がかかるのはなぜなのか？」「なぜ，英語学習を好きな人とそうでない人がいるのか？」等の「なぜ」に興味がありますか？この「なぜ」を深く理解したい時に質的研究方法が役に立つかもしれません。
本演習では，質的研究の定義とその方法論の理解を通して，人間の行動や社会的な現象，私たちの個々の経験について研究をすることができます。

国際学部で学ぶことは，ただ単に異文化や言語を学ぶことではありません。それは，世界中のさまざまな視点や価値観を理解し，広い視野を持つ力を養うことです。グローバル社会がますます複雑化していく中で，私たち一人ひとりが持つ国際的な視野とスキルは，ますます重要になっています。
